eNature Birds and Birding

Although many people do not realize it, birding is one of the most popular forms of outdoor recreation. Research supports that more than one-third of the people in the United States take part in some form of birding each year. It may just be feeding the birds in the back yard or seeing a "strange" looking bird along the road, but all of these activities make up a form of "birding."

Bird watching in the wild started in Europe more than 100 years ago and today there are more than 60 million birders in the United States. It is the single fastest growing outdoor activity. People may enjoy birding to learn more about nature, enjoy the beauty of our feathered friends, or just to relax at the end of a hard day. We have every reason to believe that birding will continue to grow, but this growth can only be perpetuated by the increase introduction of our youth to this sport. Today, the income level and age of the average birder is high, but we must find more economical opportunities to introduce our children to this fascinating sport.
